Hudson Valley used strong seventh and eighth innings to take the series lead against the Dash, winning by a score of 6–1.
The Renegades starter, Blas Castano, and Winston-Salem’s starter, Cristian Mena, held the game scoreless until the fifth inning. Hudson Valley struck first in the top of the fifth by taking advantage of the basepaths. Anthony Seigler walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third a batter later. On an Eric Wagaman sacrifice fly, Seigler would come home to score the first run of the game.
The Dash would retaliate in the bottom of the inning using fielding mistakes by the Renegades. Tyler Osik reached base via a fielding error and Harvin Mendoza would pile on with a single. Keegan Fish would both reach base and bring Osik home after Hudson Valley sailed a ball past first base, equaling the score at one but that’d be all the Dash would get. Castano would shut down the Dash for two more innings, going seven innings, only allowing four hits, and striking out four Dash batters.
All was quiet again until the seventh inning when Spencer Henson hit a three-run home run into deep left field, putting the Renegades up 4–1. In the top of the eighth, they’d score two more runs on a Trey Sweeney single, putting the game out of the reach of Winston-Salem. Leif Strom and Jhonatan Munoz shut down the Dash offense in the eighth and ninth, allowing just a single hit and two walks combined.
Despite the loss, Mena had a bright debut for the Dash, going five innings and striking out two, allowing just six hits in the process.
WELCOME TO THE 336, COLSON
On Friday night, Colson Montgomery will make his Winston-Salem Dash debut after spending the first three months in Kannapolis with the White Sox Low-A affiliate. Montgomery is currently riding a 32-game on-base streak and will look to keep it going while wearing the purple and black.
DUKE DIGGIN’
Duke Ellis has been consistent all year in showing off his contact and speed. On the basepaths, Ellis has been a terror, as he’s third place in the South Atlantic League in both stolen bases and runs with 25 and 46, respectively. Meanwhile, from the batter’s box, he’s got on base as he’s tied for tenth in batting average in the league with a .298 average.
WINSTON TOWER POWER
Luis Mieses and Bryan Ramos have been two of the most effective hitters in the South Atlantic League when playing at home. Mieses is tied for the league lead in RBIs with 29 while Ramos is tied for fourth with 27. Ramos has also hit the ball out of Truist Stadium six times this year, tied for the eighth-best mark in the league.
HOME COOKING
In their last 15 games at home, the Dash have been dominant, going 10–5. Winston-Salem took five out of the six games against Greenville before narrowly winning their series, four games to two, against their I-40 rivals, the Greensboro Grasshoppers. So far against Hudson Valley, the Dash have taken just one out of three games, but with three more games to be played, they can quickly turn that number around.
