The Winston-Salem Dash dropped the first game of a weekend series against the Rome Braves 3–2.
Rome struck first against Dash starter Andrew Dalquist, when Beau Philip launched a high drive onto the grassy hill in left field for a solo home run.
For the Braves, they gave Luis De Avila the starting nod and he was very effective. He allowed just one base hit through the first three innings before his offense picked him up in the fourth inning.
Drew Campbell crushed a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth, then Tyler Tolve tripled behind him. Beau Philip immediately plated Tolve with a single into left field, and the Braves pulled ahead 3–0.
De Avila tossed two more scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth inning but returned for the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Winston-Salem found their groove at the plate.
Luis Mieses and Adam Hackenberg ripped back-to-back singles, then Tyler Osik got the Dash on the board with an RBI single into center field. Then with Hackenberg on third, Alsander Womack lifted a sacrifice fly into straightaway center to push Hackenberg across. However, the Dash couldn’t plate any more runs and trailed 3–2 going to the eighth.
Ty Madrigal worked out of a tight spot in the eighth, setting the scene for a dramatic ninth inning. Adam Hackenberg got plunked to open the frame, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Dash couldn’t push Hackenberg across and fell 3–2 to the Braves. De Avila took the win, while Dalquist suffered the loss.
MONTGOMERY MAKING CONTACT
Colson Montgomery has carried over his hot streak from Kannapolis to Winston-Salem. Through 19 games he has a .304 average and .417 on-base percentage, including four home runs and nine RBIs. In Friday’s game, he failed to reach base, ending his on-base streak at 50 games, which is the longest in the minors this season.
DUKE DIGGIN’
Duke Ellis has been consistent all year in showing off his contact and speed. On the basepaths, Ellis has been a terror, as he’s in first place in the South Atlantic League in stolen bases with 38 and is in second place in runs in the league with 61, just one behind first place. Meanwhile, from the batter’s box, he’s got on base reliably as he’s in eleventh place in batting average in the league with a .300 average.
WINSTON TOWER POWER
Luis Mieses and Bryan Ramos have been two of the most effective hitters in the South Atlantic League when playing at home. Mieses is second in the league in RBIs with 33 while Ramos is third with 32. Ramos has also hit the ball out of Truist Stadium seven times this year, tied for the twelfth-best mark in the league.
HOME COOKING
In their last 25 games at home, the Dash have been dominant, going 16–9. Winston-Salem took five out of the six games against Greenville before narrowly winning their series, four games to two, against their I-40 rivals, the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Dash split the series with Hudson Valley through four games but took the latter two to win the series four games to two. The Dash then took three out of six games against Wilmington and dropped their first game against Rome to give them a 64% winning percentage through 25 games.
